CALHOUN - HEAVY SUGAR

Tim Locke and Jordan Roberts represent the soul of Calhoun, a band of Fort Worth (Texas) and now active since 2004 with various lineup changes, label and sound engineers.
Heavy Sugar is their fourth test (self-produced and realized together with James Barber, former curator of sound Ryan Adams and Hole ), where the duo is joined by Toby Pipes (keys, vocals), Nolan Thies (bass) and Taylor Young (drums). According to the same
Calhoun this album has three major influences: the Fleetwood Mac, Grandaddy and the Smiths, with a sprinkling of Nada Surf.
that, according to Locke and Roberts, the band has no fear to be called pop nor too old to take refuge in an indie-rock alternative, deliberately badly affected, with no long melodic lines with huge choruses and played only once in each song, though, judging from what I heard of the previous albums, their stylistic imprint seems to me, rather than a step to the independent folk, only a reaffirmation of the latter.
Moreover, even call it pop just would not be correct: there is certainly an array of alternative-country, blues and a shade lighter than the typical attitude of the song-writing barely stained rock.
But that, perhaps inevitably happens a bit 'to almost all the American musicians.
However, if you want to hear something very pop but not quite mainstream, sounds very accurate but not very slick, with nice song-forms but not stupid jingles and troubling, if you want to start a Sunday morning in a completely carefree and light or put a disk in the background while chatting happily with friends on your last trip, this is definitely for you.
Or if you fancy a more mature pop, unique and refined, you could move a little more than a thousand miles east, in South Carolina and hear a good record of Pernice Brothers.
